Manthorp(e) Gathering May 2010

Date 8th Oct 2009 | Topic: Events

Dear fellow Manthorp(e),

I would like to propose that the next Manthorp(e) Gathering is held on the first May Bank Holiday weekend, i.e. Saturday 1st May 2010 in the little village of Thorpeness, Suffolk, England. It is situated near Saxmundham and there are many places to visit e.g. Aldeburgh, Woodbridge (including Sutton Hoo) and Ipswich.
Why Thorpeness?
Firstly it's in Suffolk which is considered to be a Manthorp county. Secondly and rather weakly, because it has Thorpe in its name! Thirdly, and most importantly, because it is such a beautiful place for us to all be together. Thorpeness is, in my opinion, one of the most idyllic locations in England. I would even venture so far as to say in the world! This tiny, quiet, village is situated right by the beach on the Suffolk Heritage coastline with a beautiful mere. I strongly recommend that, if you are able, you look at some websites of the area, but in the meantime, I am attaching a couple of photos .

I am suggesting that we hire Ogilvie Hall which is a lovely mock Tudor building where we can meet, exhibit "Manthorpe" items, have a buffet lunch and talk! It has even been suggested that in the afternoon we hold our very own regatta on the mere (watched by those with less energy).

If people felt it appropriate I could arrange a Manthorp(e) Family church service in a neighbouring village, to follow the tradition of previous Gatherings..

Based on an attendance of 50 people, I am guessing that the cost could be in the region of £20/£25 per adult.

There is plenty of accommodation in and around Thorpeness available including the famous "House in the Clouds", and I can provide details if anyone wants to stay for a few days (you won't be disappointed).

So that's it. Now I need some feedback in order to decide if we can go ahead or not. Please reply with the answers to these three questions:

() Would you be likely to attend? If so, how many people would be in your party?
() Is this particular weekend suitable? If not, would the last bank holiday in May be better?
() Would you be interested in a church service either on the day or on Sunday?
